I had 0 publications when I got a research internship at Cambridge at the age of 20 as an international student not studying at a US/UK university.
I was 19 when I got a research internship at Ashoka with just one ongoing independent research project.
If you’re thinking about whether you have enough experience/skills or whether you’re “good enough” to apply to that position, here’s what I have to say:
- For most research positions, while having research experience is a plus, not having research experience is NOT a minus - it’s neutral
- Profs look for curiosity, willingness to learn, motivation, ambition, POTENTIAL etc. more than research skills
- You’re there to learn. No one expects you to know everything during your research internship
- Chances of you getting in if you apply >>>>> chances of you getting in if you don’t apply so don't self-reject
- Apply any way and if you don’t get selected, request feedback from the prof about your profile, CV, cold email, etc, incorporate that feedback, and apply again.
